St Michael’s Abbey, Farnborough

Comprehensive AV, IT and Security Integration for Historic Benedictine Monastery

Seamlessly blending cutting-edge audiovisual, IT, broadcast, and security technologies with the timeless architecture of a historic Benedictine monastery, this comprehensive multi-phase integration project demonstrates our expertise in sensitively modernising heritage buildings while preserving their sacred character and architectural integrity.

Project Brief

Saint Michael’s Abbey, a historic Benedictine monastery founded in 1895, required a comprehensive technology upgrade to enhance worship experiences while preserving the building’s sacred character and architectural heritage. The project scope evolved from an initial audio system upgrade to encompass broadcast streaming, CCTV, and site-wide networking infrastructure.

Key Challenges

  • Heritage Constraints: Installing modern technology in a listed building whilst respecting architectural integrity
  • Environmental Conditions: Equipment protection in basement and crypt areas requiring IP-rated solutions
  • Limited Cable Routes: Architectural restrictions demanding innovative cabling and equipment placement strategies
  • Aesthetic Integration: Ensuring all technology blends seamlessly with historic surroundings
  • Evolving Project Scope: Adapting design and installation to coordinate with ongoing restoration works

Audio System

  • Bose MA12 modular column array loudspeakers providing even coverage throughout nave, high altar, and side chapels
  • Custom RAL colour-matched speaker enclosures and bespoke mounting brackets
  • Sennheiser MobileConnect accessibility system for hearing-impaired users
  • Professional microphone solutions including Sennheiser gooseneck and Audio Technica boundary microphones

Video & Broadcast

  • Five Panasonic AW-UE50 PTZ cameras with custom colour-matching and discrete mounting
  • Blackmagic Design broadcast hardware with Epiphan Pearl Nano streaming solution
  • 10″ Lilliput monitor for organist improved visibility
  • Multi-platform streaming capability for YouTube and other online services

Security Integration

  • Site-wide networking solution linking Abbey and Monastery buildings
  • Lightware VINX encoders/decoders for video distribution
  • Strategic equipment rack placement with IP-rated enclosures where required

Specialist Heritage Approach

Our team employed specialist techniques developed for listed buildings and heritage environments:

  • Custom colour-matching of all visible equipment to RAL specifications
  • Bespoke bracket design ensuring secure mounting without stonework damage
  • Discrete cable management using custom-coloured trunking systems
  • Warranty-compliant modifications through manufacturer partnerships
  • Coordinated installation working around conservation and restoration activities

Outcomes & Benefits

The project delivered an enhanced worship experience with crystal-clear audio throughout the Abbey, enabling the community to reach a global congregation through professional live streaming capabilities. The future-proof infrastructure now supports the monastery’s evolving needs while achieving seamless architectural integration that preserves the building’s historic character. Operational efficiency has been significantly improved through integrated control systems and dual-purpose security solutions, whilst modern hearing assistance technology ensures full accessibility compliance for all worshippers.

Client Feedback

“We remain one of the most traditional communities in terms of our worship here at Saint Michael’s, but we are now one of the most modern in terms of the technology we use to promote that worship.” – Father Abbot, Saint Michael’s Abbey

“When working onsite, it was like the Whitwam AVI team were invisible. We didn’t even know they were there, and their work was professional and accurate.” – Brother Michael
