Winchester Cathedral

Historic Winchester Cathedral is a major tourist attraction distinguished by being the longest medieval cathedral in the world.

To keep ahead of the AV technology curve, the Cathedral looked to Whitwam AVI to design and install a new touch screen-controlled speech and music sound system consisting of custom painted column loudspeakers covering the Nave, side aisles, Transepts, Sanctuary, Ambulatory and Lady Chapel, while the Quire is fitted with cabinet loudspeakers located within the choir stalls. A selection of bodypack, handheld and stand mount radio microphones is provided and each wired microphone location is fitted with an on/off button and a live LED indicator. From touch screen connection points located in the Nave and Quire the control system enables the selection of loudspeaker zones, microphone on/off switching, selection of radio microphones, control of the CD recorder/player, the induction loop hearing system on/off, as well as control of the music microphones and all volume levels. The technology upgrade also features a multi-camera video system which includes a dedicated organist’s monitor, relay screens in the nave and a webcast system. We also designed a touch screen-controlled sound system in the Triforium Gallery.
